What Factors Influence Your Motivation and Level of Participation in Athletics Training?

1. We would like you to devote in-depth thinking to the section of your Log It or Lose it training diary which asks you: What or who motivated/influenced my level of participation/effort. When you have edited your response well - copy and paste it here.

2. When you have read the comments of your classmates choose one blog to respond to. Remember your reply should be: POSITIVE THOUGHTFUL HELPFUL

  1. Yesterday I was teaching a Year 10 PE class and I had two students who really don't like Track & Field (Athletics). They were fairly negative when they arrived to class and their warm-up wasn't great either. The two of them decided to work on Shot Put and I gave them some feedback with their throwing. They took the FB on board but realistically, they probably only had 4 throws each...then got bored. They told me they were going to Discus and I was on my way over there to help others anyway so we walked and talked about how we could improve our performances. I'm going somewhere with this.
The students both knew what their Personal Best (PB's) throws were and set a cone at their PB marks. Quite a few students were throwing but these two got quite a bit of quality feedback looking at and working on specific parts to the Discus movement. Then, something clicked with both students and they set PB's. Their delight was obvious and both were gaining confidence in their throwing. The FB continued and the students continued to improve their performances with even more PB's set but now, it was time to go and get changed as the lesson was coming to an end. Only these two wanted to continue throwing and while everyone was packing up, they squeezed as many extra throws in as they could.
What happened here? How did we get such a significant shift in their motivation and level of participation in the space of 45 minutes?

  3. On Monday the 17th of February I wrote knowing that I needed to accomplish my goals was a big influence towards my effort and participation today. It helped me understand that I am out there for a reason and that is to achieve PE/Athletics with nothing lower than a Merit. Also having people there with me during training to help me and give me more confidence that my throw wasn't bad or just telling me that was a good throw, makes me more motivated towards my training .

Jojo motivated me to push harder towards the end and never give up. She tells me to “keep pushing POSHY!” And strive my arms all the way through towards the end. She inspires me to be the best version of myself. For me motivation pushes you towards your goal because of a desire for change and improvement. Motivation helps me clarify my goal so I know exactly what i’m working towards.

My planning and reflections influenced me today. After reading back on my work I noticed that I was checking off everything I need to work on from watching professional women do long jump. When I was reading I could see my progress and realised I am getting closer to how professionals do it. Once I fix up my mistakes I need to train my muscle memory into remember the structure and everything I'm learning along the way.

Everyone motivates me to do better and try my absolute best, whenever I see someone do better than me at something I have to try harder and get a better score than them. Especially 100m, when I am racing someone and they are in front of me I try harder to beat them or at least try to beat them. ( I’m a bit competitive )

I strongly believe that my level of participation was influenced by the people I worked with because they gave me effective advice on how I could perform better at an event by critiquing my movements and giving me the most effective training session. My effort rate became higher after the opinions of others that I had received making me want to work harder as to why I gave myself an excellence for my level of participation / effort.

  19. Mr. Scott helped me with the shot put. He taught me the approach and that I need to move across the board as fast as possible. He taught me the stance, and how to use all the necessary muscles, to bend my knees and release upwards not downwards.

    3. Moving across the circle quickly will benefit you but it has to be a controlled movement. it's a strange way of looking at things but you have to have your body in a position to "push off the earth" while also moving forward. If you look at Val Adams shot putting, she can have 6 throws and they all look identical but her best put is 21 metres and her worst is 18. She knows when she's "TIMED" the movements as soon as she releases the shot. Shot put looks straightforward but its actually a very complex movement.

    2. Awesome stuff Sayden. It shows that if you are willing to train with a purpose and really focus on specific parts to the skill, you'll find the results rewarding. Now that you've achieved your goal for javelin, perhaps you should consider setting a new target. Have you got a performance goal for Athletics Day next week?

  21. Definitely watching the boys having a throw of the javelin motivated me to push myself to see if I could even remotely get close to their scores(I did not)they were throwing over 20 meters while I was throwing 17 meters but it did not stop me from trying. Also trying to surpass my own PB score which was 18.80 meters and trying to tackle the right technique that suits me so I could feel comfortable and confident.

    1. From my observations in VB Alisi, I know you've got a "very quick rotational shoulder" so the potential to transfer from one skill to another (serving / spiking to javelin throwing) is there. So there must be other parts of the javelin technique worth focusing on that should lead to throws over 20 metres

    2. Great job Lisi. I like how you use other people around you to influence your participation and help you to move fordward.

New things to learn My rotation of the body and my foot work.spin off left foot spin around then spin off the right foot and release All in one motion without falling over

    3. BTW - Intermediate Boys Discus record set in 1974 by Bernard Goodhue (Jack's dad) is 42.81. Right now you're throwing int he "30's". If you can perform the spin in balance and also release the discus with proper technique, I see you going over 35 metres and possibly into the 40's. Hopefully time isn't running out on you Tremaine. Consider performing the spin a bit slower at first. I think as a new learner to the spin technique, the faster you try to perform the skill the more mistakes you make. But you'll never learn it until you practice it....a lot!

  23. On Friday 21 Februaruy I wrote that watching videos helps me to know what I need to improve on and how I should do it. So knowing what I am going to be doing for the day gives me the motivation to keep going and to continue practicing. Another reason why my participation is at a high rate is because I surround myself with people who encourage and motivate me to do better.

i believe that i participated much better in my event when i had my partner Cj helping me run my 200m. He motivated me most when i was coming to the end of my run and he said "keep going". This made me want to run my fastest. I strongly believe that my friends around me motivate me the most.

    1. Yeah - many athletes draw inspiration from a crowd while others shy away from it. What is a given though is that when you have positive people around you encouraging you, you will perform much better than those seeking opportunities to criticize or influence you in a negative way. For the 200 metres I would suggest you run the curve hard and on the final straight, lift those knees and stride it out. You want to maintain your speed for as long as possible when all of that lactic acid is pooling in your muscles.

What motivated me today was that I was really keen to do things the right way and do things I really need to work on and to achieve better scores. Who influenced me was whaea ruth because she really made me want to work hard and really just told me that I can go and I just got motivated and was ready to train. I give myself a merit because I thought that I did well in my training today because I got better in ways that I weren’t.

In high jump I jump over 1.45m and in javelin I throw the passest 25m.

  28. I did Javelin today and I improved a lot on my technique and did much better than I expected though I was a little bit sore having not warmed up. Oop-. Sir Scott and Whaea Ruth also gave me good advice which pushed me further and demonstrated techniques that I utilised in my own training. I need to work on aiming high with my Jav and footwork, namely keeping my back foot on the ground.

Even though I missed a whole week of HPE training I still motivated myself to watch videos and practise the techniques at home.
And tbh, watching videos has a better influence on me then having a go straight away because it allows me to visualise my game play before trying at all. I anticipate to try harder next training and watch more videos during my own time.

  32. Your post makes me want to make many comments Jayda Mae. Firstly,it's great that you continued to 'learn by video' when you couldn't attend school. I refer to those same videos to keep me informed about latest training techniques. After all the coaches you get access via youtube are much, much more experienced and knowledgeable than I in the various events. Secondly,I was intrigued to discover you use visualisation aka mental rehearsal as a training strategy. I will be watching your application with interest.

  34. I'm pleased that your research has helped you train using drills to learn the correct technique Thomas. I'd be interested to know more, like, which events in particular have you improved in using this training strategy and how have your 'Personal Bests'(PBs) progressed? Naming the events and including the measurements would answer these questions.

Also explain what influence level of participation:
I feel as though my level of participation was excellent, because i tried in all the events i did to my very best ability. The events i participated in was Discus, Shot put, Javelin and long jump an event im very proud of is shot put because i not only came first but almost beat the record of 10.9 but was of my 4cm. Something i would change is making sure i told the long jump Coordinators that u needed a Verified score for HPE. What influenced my level of participation was doing
Everything in the best of my ability.

Make a judgement and explain the level of your participation on Athletics Day:
Also explain what influence level of participation:
I give myself a 9 ½ out of 10 because I know for a fact I can do better than I did on the day I subtracted a ½ a point because I did 9 event’s but missed the 1500m and 3000m.I was ashamed of the numbers I got because there nothing I got in my practice runs,To me I was ammo as.But still less I did as much as i could for my house. What influence my level all the bros having a day where all the bros compete against each other it’s good because you can see who’s sweetie and who’s not.

  39. On Athletics Day I think my level of participation was at a great level. I participated in most events giving them a good go. I could have done a lot better in some events. The events I participated in were 100m dash, 200m dash, 400m dash 800m, Long jump, High jump, Javelin, Discus, Shotput and Relays. The only event I missed out was the 1500m and What really affected my level of participation and effort had to be striving my hardest and wanting to do my house to do better.

  40. On athletics day i tried my best in every event i did. What motivated me was trying to beat my old me, what really helped me was my training for athletics like for insistence my first long jump score was 3.1 meters and my athletics day result was 4.21 meters that's 1.12 meters better than my first score. What motivated my participation was to help my house get as much points as i could get for them.
